AFRETEC Workshop on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Knowledge Creation

The University of Nairobi is honored to have hosted a two-day AFRETEC workshop on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Knowledge Creation on November 25-26, 2024. Held at the University Towers, the event brought together representatives from AFRETEC partner institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University Africa, the American University in Cairo, Université Cheikh Anta Diop, University of Lagos, University of Rwanda, University of the Witwatersrand, and Al Akhawayn University.

The workshop provided a dynamic platform to explore how DEI can be embedded in research and knowledge creation to drive impactful digital growth across Africa. Key discussions revolved around practical strategies, challenges, and opportunities for promoting inclusivity within academic institutions and research ecosystems. The event featured engaging panel sessions, case studies, and collaborative group activities aimed at mapping inequities and developing actionable plans.

Prominent speakers included leaders from academia and government who shared insights on current DEI practices, policies, and the importance of inclusive research. Participants collaborated through interactive sessions such as the “World Café” and breakout groups, focusing on identifying the qualities of inclusive research, addressing challenges, and proposing solutions for embedding DEI principles.

This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring diversity and equity in knowledge creation, shaping a future where inclusivity drives innovation and growth in Africa’s digital landscape.
